Alpine lifestyle in the mountaineering village
The towns and villages united in the Mountain Villages Initiative are pioneers of alpinism in their regions. That is why the mountains and mountaineering are highly valued in the cultural identity of locals and visitors alike. Here, awareness of the necessary harmony between nature and humankind is still alive and natural boundaries are respected.
The mountaineering village emblem with its green footprint and stylized blue ski track fits well with Leonhardstein. “We deliberately sought this award,” says Mayor Josef Bierschneider, “because it suits our village, our way of thinking, and our landscape.” The region offers a wide range of mountaineering activities, from alpine hikes to rock climbing. Natural beauties such as the Weissachau landscape conservation area and the high plateau around Wildbad Kreuth are closely linked to the history of the Kreuther Winkel. This was shaped by the monks of the Benedictine monastery of Tegernsee and later by the Wittelsbach family.
The special mentality of the Kreuthers, who consciously cultivate their distance from the lively Tegernsee, is appreciated by guests. For over 200 years, visitors have been coming here in search of peace and quiet, nature experiences, and lively customs. The spa town has developed into a year-round destination while retaining its original character. Down-to-earth agriculture, first-class craftsmen, alpine pastures, taverns, and a lively club scene go hand in hand with the sustainable use of natural resources. “Our cultural landscape, unspoiled nature, and traditions are a treasure,” says Bierschneider, which we want to pass on to future generations.
Guests can now feel at home in the new mountaineering village, whether they are sporty or laid-back. The village community has worked hard to implement the mountaineering village idea in a way that is typical of Kreuth. The fourth Bavarian mountaineering village lives up to its municipal coat of arms!
